Cruze P1101 after a valve-cover replacement: the manifold PCV link

Updated 2026-10-09 · Check Engine Solutions editorial desk

The short answer

P1101

P1101 is GM’s “Intake Air Flow System Performance” code: the intake airflow needs diagnosis.

On LUJ/LUV Cruze engines, GM identifies a missing intake-manifold non-return valve as a cause of cam-cover PCV diaphragm damage. A repeat P1101 or P0171 after cover work therefore warrants a check of both parts of the system. Confirmed cover and manifold faults each carry a separate replacement decision.

Part 1

Why replacing the cover can leave the cause behind

PIP5197F describes checking the cam-cover PCV port for oil leakage or vacuum at idle. A confirmed fault there calls for the camshaft-cover assembly. The procedure then checks the manifold’s non-return valve, because a missing valve can damage the cover diaphragm. When the valve is confirmed missing, GM prescribes the manifold assembly.

Oil can hide the valve during inspection. GM requires confirmation before declaring it absent; when the valve is present, the manifold is retained. The distinction matters when the next estimate proposes another large part.

Part 2

What the pressure reading adds

The LUJ/LUV normal crankcase-pressure range is −11 to −18 inH₂O in Park at hot idle. PIP5197F also has the technician record behavior under its specified additional test conditions. The older PIP5197A shares the same normal hot-idle range; later diagnostic branches should be read from the chosen revision as a whole.

With the manifold valve correctly seated, the investigation continues through the bulletin’s pressure and engine-condition checks. A cover-replacement invoice alone leaves those results unanswered.
