Cruze P0299 or P0234 in extreme cold: GM’s LE2 icing repair path
The short answer
P0299P0299 means “Engine Underboost” in GM’s code list: the engine is producing less boost than expected.
For the 2016–2019 LE2 Cruze, GM identifies ice in the charge-air cooler or turbocharger control valve as a possible cause of incorrect boost pressure in extreme cold. The correction combines thawing and inspection with the applicable cooler, TCV and calibration work.

When the bulletin applies
22-NA-007 describes short or slow journeys at 0°F (−18°C) or below, with symptoms during the first 10–15 minutes of operation. Its listed codes include P0299 and P0234. GM requires the complaint to be directly correlated with extreme cold, and system leaks to be excluded first for P0299. Icing must be shown by more than ordinary moisture.

What GM’s correction includes
Service begins once the vehicle has thawed. The May 2023 revision distinguishes a cooler that has already been replaced from one that has never received the revised part. The procedure includes moisture removal from the cooler, assessment of oil/moisture contamination and service of the turbocharger control valve, including its thermal wrap. This is a conditional repair path, rather than a recommendation to replace every component.
PIP5812 is the earlier TCV moisture reference. The May 2023 22-NA-007 serves as the primary document here; its service instructions, including the cleaning steps, come from that revision alone.

The calibration question requires a VIN check
22-NA-007 includes an ECM update intended to reduce frequent overdrive use in cold weather, with higher highway engine speed as a possible result. Its model table lists the 2016–2019 Cruze, while the programming heading on page 5 states 2018–2022. Current VIN-specific service information should resolve that inconsistency. This guide excludes 2020–2022 from its Cruze coverage and keeps Encore calibration years out of the Cruze application.

What to record before service
Take this to your technician · Use your browser’s Print command to print this card.
Note the temperature, time since start, driving pattern and the full stored-code report. That evidence allows the technician to assess icing, check leak-test results and identify prior cooler or calibration work. Mechanical cleaning, programming and loaded road tests remain part of the professional procedure. The GM code label is cited from 22-NA-224 only; the Malibu repair in that document stays with the Malibu.
