Malibu P1101: charge-air leaks and the PCV pressure branch

Updated 2026-10-09 · Check Engine Solutions editorial desk

The short answer

P1101

P1101 is GM’s “Intake Air Flow System Performance” code: the intake airflow needs diagnosis.

For the 1.5L LFV Malibu, GM describes two relevant paths: a disconnected charge-air tube with reduced power, or excessive crankcase pressure from a blocked PCV orifice. The correction follows the finding: repair the damaged connection, or address the orifice and cover gaskets.

Vehicle application

Chevrolet Malibu: 2016–2022 LFV pressure branch and 2018–2022 LFV charge-air connection branch; additional coupler applications require VIN matching.

Part 1

Reduced power: inspect the charge-air connection

22-NA-224 covers a charge-air-cooler outlet tube that has separated from the throttle body. P1101 or P0299 can accompany the loss of power. GM’s inspection distinguishes an intact joint from a disconnected tube, then checks the tube, retainer and throttle body for actual damage. The damaged component is the repair target.

When the connection is intact, diagnosis continues through the code’s normal service path. The bulletin reserves throttle-body or mass-airflow-sensor replacement for a confirmed cause or damage, rather than the code alone. PIP5402D adds a separate possibility: a damaged or missing O-ring at a charge-air-cooler coupler.

Part 2

P1101 with oil leakage: check the LFV pressure branch

20-NA-047 includes the 2016–2022 Malibu 1.5L LFV. Its normal crankcase-pressure range is −1 to −5 inH₂O at hot idle with the transmission in Park. A reading above 0 inH₂O is a positive-pressure concern requiring further diagnosis.

GM directs attention to intake restrictions and the PCV system. A blocked orifice is inspected along with the camshaft-cover passages; the correction is orifice replacement as needed and replacement of the cover gaskets. This branch explains why an oil-seal estimate may also need a pressure finding.
