Short answer
In GM bulletin 22-NA-224, reduced engine power is a driver complaint that may come with the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), the check engine light. The engine control module may hold one or more of five codes: P0101, P0172, P0299, P0506 or P1101.
For the 2018–2022 Equinox and Terrain 1.5L LYX, the cause GM names is a charge air cooler (CAC) outlet tube that has separated from the throttle body. The technician checks that connection first. A tube that has come off leads to an inspection of the tube, its retainer clip and the throttle body; the tube assembly is replaced if it is damaged or its O-ring seal is missing, and the throttle body only if it is damaged. A tube that is still connected sends diagnosis back to the stored codes.
- Codes GM lists with the complaint: P0101, P0172, P0299, P0506 and/or P1101.
- First check: is the CAC outlet tube still connected at the throttle body?
- The throttle body and MAF sensor are replaced only if damaged or proven to cause the code.
- 2018–2019 only: PIP5402D adds a coupler O-ring check after normal diagnostics.
Before you replace parts
22-NA-224 ends its correction with a limit: the throttle body and mass airflow (MAF) sensor associated with the listed codes should be replaced only if they are damaged or found to be the cause of the code. A stored code alone does not meet that test. The bulletin does not name the turbocharger as a cause or a repair. Before approving parts, ask what the shop found at the CAC outlet tube and the throttle body.

GM diagnostic paths
CAC outlet tube separated from the throttle body
2018–2022 Equinox and Terrain, 1.5L LYX
- How to confirm
- The technician confirms whether the charge air cooler outlet pipe is connected at the throttle body. If the tube has come off, its end is inspected for contact damage or an O-ring seal that blew off, and the throttle body is compared with GM’s photos of normal and abnormal witness marks.
- GM correction
- A damaged tube or a missing O-ring seal means a new tube assembly. A throttle body with abnormal witness marks or damage is replaced; normal witness marks normally will not require replacement. GM’s correction calls damage to the tube or throttle body a rare case. If the tube is still connected, the technician follows GM’s published diagnostics for each stored code.

Missing or damaged O-ring in the CAC coupler
2018–2019 Equinox and Terrain, 1.5L LYX (PIP5402D also lists the 2.0L LTG)
- How to confirm
- This check comes after normal service-information diagnostics have not found a solution. The coupler sits on the passenger side of the charge air cooler, where the air duct slips into it; the technician inspects it for a missing or damaged O-ring seal.
- GM correction
- PIP5402D identifies the seal as the item to find and gives no part number. GM adds that a smoke test of the induction and charge air cooler system with the EEST GE 41413-A may help isolate other leaks. That test is a shop procedure.

The codes GM lists with this complaint
22-NA-224 (November 2022, replacing PIP5651G) covers reduced engine power and/or a lit MIL on the 2018–2022 Equinox and Terrain 1.5L LYX. The technician may find any one of five codes, or several at once. P0299, GM’s engine underboost code, is one of them.
PIP5402D is preliminary information from July 2018 for the 2018–2019 models. Its condition is a lit check engine lamp and/or reduced engine power with P015B and/or P1101 set current or in history; P0101 also appears in its title. It does not list P0299.
Codes named in GM’s documents for the Equinox and Terrain. PIP5402D entries apply to 2018–2019 only.

How the charge-air connection is checked
GM’s correction starts at the throttle body. If the charge air outlet tube is still attached there, the bulletin sends the technician to GM’s published diagnostics for each code that set. If it has come off, the CAC tube, the tube retainer clip and the throttle body are inspected for damage.
The bulletin’s warranty labor operations list installation of a charge air tube retainer kit, with outlet tube or throttle body replacement added only if needed. Parts are chosen by VIN through GM service information and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog.
2018–2019: the coupler O-ring and the 2.0L engine
PIP5402D superseded PIP5402C to update model years. For the Equinox and Terrain it lists 2018–2019 with either the 1.5L LYX or the 2.0L LTG. 22-NA-224 lists the 1.5L LYX only, so the separated-tube bulletin is not a reference for a 2.0L LTG.
The PI applies only after normal SI diagnostics have not found a solution. Its photo is from a Cadillac ATS; GM notes that other models are similar.
Who these documents are written for
22-NA-224 states that GM bulletins are intended for professional technicians, not do-it-yourselfers, and warns against assuming that a described condition applies to a particular vehicle. A GM dealer can say whether it fits a given vehicle. When booking service, note the bulletin number, the stored codes and whether the loss of power came with the check engine light.
GM warranty labor time for this repair
22-NA-224 lists these labor operations in its Warranty Information for vehicles repaired under the Powertrain coverage. The figures are hours, not a price. The retainer kit is the base operation; outlet tube and throttle body replacement are added only if needed. PIP5402D lists no labor time.

Questions and answers
Is there a recall for reduced engine power on a Chevy Equinox?
Not for this cause. NHTSA’s recall records, read on October 14, 2026, show no recall for the 2018–2022 Equinox or Terrain covering the charge air tube, the charge air cooler (intercooler), the turbocharger or the air intake. 22-NA-224 is a service bulletin: it guides the repair, but it is not a recall. To see open recalls for a specific vehicle, enter its VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
What does reduced engine power mean?
In 22-NA-224 it is the driver’s complaint, listed next to an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp; either one or both may be present. On the 2018–2022 Equinox and Terrain 1.5L, GM connects it to codes P0101, P0172, P0299, P0506 and P1101 and to a charge air cooler outlet tube that has separated from the throttle body.
How do you fix reduced engine power?
GM’s repair depends on what the technician finds at the charge air cooler outlet tube. If it has come off the throttle body, the tube, retainer clip and throttle body are inspected; a damaged tube or a missing O-ring seal means a new tube assembly, and the throttle body is replaced only if damaged. If it is connected, the stored codes are diagnosed through GM service information. On 2018–2019 models, PIP5402D adds a coupler O-ring check after normal diagnostics. These are dealer or qualified-technician procedures.
How much does it cost to fix reduced engine power?
GM gives no price. 22-NA-224 lists GM warranty labor time instead: 0.4 hr to install the charge air tube retainer kit, plus 0.6 hr on the Equinox and Terrain if the charge air cooler outlet tube is replaced and 0.2 hr if the throttle body is replaced. A shop’s bill depends on its labor rate and on the parts the VIN calls for. A GM dealer can say whether warranty coverage applies to a given vehicle.
